Catalogue Note

The studies on this sheet appear to relate to two figures in a fresco by Garzi portraying The Miracle of Saint Catherine of Siena, in the church of Santa Caterina a Formello, Naples. A composition drawing for the whole fresco is in the Prado, Madrid (see M.B. Mena Marqués, Museo del Prado, Catálogo de Dibujos: Dibujos Italianos del siglo XVII, vol. VI, Madrid 1983, inv. no. F.D. 94, cat. no. 135, p.88, reproduced fig. 135). The study on the recto can be connected with a draped figure to the right of the composition, and the slighter figure on the verso is possibly a first thought for the figure fleeing the scene at the lower left.
