Catalogue Note

This drawing appears to be a first thought for the figures in the painting of the same subject in the Lutomirski Collection, Milan (fig. 1; see also A. Morassi, Guardi I dipinti, Milan 1983, vol. I, p. 308, cat. no. 7). The final composition actually derives from Carlo Cignani's depiction of the scene, now in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden (inv. no. 387).
