Catalogue Note

Both sides of this sheet bear similarities to Poussin's painted compositions.  The recto at first sight appears to be a study for an Ecce Homo, although with its bold use of classical architecture, a prominent exclamatory figure and groups of active figures below, it may be compared to The Rape of the Sabines in the Louvre.  Similarly, the grouping of the figures on the verso seems to echo that of The Death of Sapphira, also in the Louvre.
