Another version of this composition is in the Louvre (inv. 23.088; see F. Lugt, Musée du Louvre, Inventaire Général des Dessins des Ecoles du Nord, Ecole Flamande, Paris 1949, vol. I, p. 36, cat. no. 483, reproduced plate XXXVIII). Without making a direct side-by-side comparison of the two drawings, an assessment of their relative quality is difficult, but Dr. Matthias Winner has kindly informed us that on the basis of a photograph, he finds the attribution of the present drawing to Jan Breughel plausible. Two other, apparently rather weaker versions are in Budapest and in the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut.
