Catalogue Note

Although the figure would appear to be based on a classical work of art, it has not been possible to connect it to any of the similar drawings in Girolamo da Carpi's Roman sketchbook. It is, however, very similar in conception and presentation to A Draped Female Figure Holding a Staff, which was sold in these rooms, 12 January 1990, lot 163. Both were also from the collection of Jonathan Richardson and have the top corners clipped.
