Catalogue Note
A preparatory study, with some differences, for Farinati's lunette fresco in the church of S. Nazzaro, Verona (see fig. 1). The lunette, which was much admired, is above the celebrated altarpiece of the Annunciation, also by Farinati and dated 1557, in the second chapel to the right of the entrance to the church. This chapel is only a part of the vast decorative scheme Farinati completed in the church and which is possibly his most important work in Verona. A drawing of the same subject at Windsor is considered later than the fresco in S.Nazzaro and has a very different composition (see F. Dal Forno, Paolo Farinati, Verona 1965, p. 40 and fig. 7).
