Catalogue Note

Johann Steiner is first recorded in 1570 in Stuttgart where he worked on the restoration of the fire-damaged great hall in the castle.  Although he married in Tübingen in 1578, he seems to have lived and worked almost entirely in Stuttgart, where he was court painter from 1576 until his death.  Steiner's surviving drawings include several other hunting scenes with topographical views in the background, similarly inscribed, including examples in Stuttgart and Basel (see Heinrich Geissler, Zeichnung in Deutschland...1540-1640, exhibition catalogue, Stuttgart 1979, vol. II, nos. G1, G2), and another sold London, Christie's, 12 December 1985, lot 346.
