Catalogue Note

James Byam Shaw, in a letter to Julien Stock (22 February 1976), confirmed the attribution of this drawing to Francesco Guardi.  He dated it to the artist's early period when he was much influenced by Canaletto, and compared the figures to those in two drawings of the Piazzetta S. Marco with the Basilica and Campanile (see A. Morassi, Guardi, Tutti i Disegni, Venice 1975, figs. 324, 326).
