Attributed to Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael Haarlem 1628/9 - 1682 Amsterdam

Although Ruisdael's drawings are usually slightly more defined and energetic, the details of handing are very close indeed to accepted works by the artist, particularly in the way the wash and chalk are combined and the use of accents of much darker, almost black wash.  Comparable examples include the Landscape with a Windmill, in the British Museum, and particularly the View of the Bank of a Stream with Trees and a Road, in a private collection, which Slive dates to the 1660s (see S. Slive, Jacob van Ruisdael, New Haven/London 2001, cat. nos. D84 and D133).
