Catalogue Note
This drawing can be associated with the fine series of alpine landscapes which Hackaert drew during visits to Switzerland between 1653 and 1656 (see Gustav Solar, Jan Hackaert, Die Schweizer Ansichten 1653-1656, Zürich 1981). While the exact location depicted here has still to be identified, the general disposition of the landscape is very similar to that seen in another drawing by Hackaert, in the Lugt Collection, which it has been suggested shows the valley of the River Drance, a tributary of the Rhône, near Martigny (see Dessins de Paysagistes Hollandais du XVIIe Siècle, exhibition catalogue, Brussels/Rotterdam/Paris/Berne, 1968-9, cat. no. 75, reproduced plate 170).
