Catalogue Note
Hackert's letters record that in the early part of 1793, he travelled in the Lazio and Abruzzo regions, making stops in Isola di Sora, Anitrella, Cassino and Balsorano, before continuing to Naples. The existence of the present drawing is the only indication that while he was in this area, the artist also visited the small town of Capistrello, which lies at the edge of the Monti Simbriuni, close to Avezzano. The significance of the other part of the inscription, 'l'Emisario di Claudio' remains, however, unclear. The appearance of this previously unrecorded drawing adds another detail to our knowledge of Hackert's movements, and also a large and impressive drawing to his oeuvre.
