Catalogue Note
This drawing is related to a painting in a private collection in Florence Allegoria Medicea e Fiori, by Pietro Dandini and with surrounding flowers by Andrea Scacciati (see Sandro Bellesi, 'I rapporti di collaborazione tra Pier Dandini e Andrea Scacciati: le tele con le 'Allegorie delle Stagioni'', Paragone, March 1989, pp. 87-92, fig. 79). In his subsequent Paragone article (see Literature), Bellesi explained the allegorical subject of this composition, which is based on Cesare Ripa's Iconologia. In the centre, the figure of Tuscany with her attributes and the Medici coat-of-arms, is crowned with the granducal crown. Fame is at the top right of the composition while the figure of the river Arno is in the foreground. To left are the arms of Pope Pius V Ghislieri, who was very close to the Medici family, and presided over the coronation of Cosimo I in February 1570.
