This drawing relates to a painting by Pietro Dandini, representing either Solomon and the Queen of Sheba or Esther and Ahasuerus, which was sold, New York, Sotheby's, 27 January 2005, lot 185A(when our drawing was exhibited alongside the painting). A comparable drawing of the same subject in the British Museum (inv. no. 1979-6-23-28) bears an inscription in an old hand identifying the scene as the story of Esther.
