Catalogue Note
In both style and subject, this drawing is very close to a small group of drawings given to this interesting painter, who trained in Verona and then worked at the court of Parma. Previously Fra Semplice's drawings, which are often executed in the same combination of chalks as the present sheet, have been attributed to Cavedone, Faccini and sometimes also to Annibale Carracci. For further information see D. Lachenmann, 'Two Preparatory Studies by Fra Semplice da Verona', Master Drawings, vol. XXX, no. 2, 1992, pp. 210- 215.
