Catalogue Note
Schnackenburg (loc. cit.) dates this lively study to between 1650 and 1665, pointing out that the sketchy technique used here by Ostade is somewhat unusual. Trautscholdt proposed (loc. cit.) that this is a self-portrait, but Schnackenburg remains cautious: he acknowledges the sitter's direct gaze, and his concentrated expression, but observes that his facial features differ rather from those in the known representations of Ostade.
