Two other drawings, extremely comparable in both style and dimensions to this and the following lot, are in Edinburgh, where they are attributed to Simon de Vlieger (inv. nos. RSA 347 and 520; see K. Andrews, Catalogue of Netherlandish Drawings in the National Gallery of Scotland, 2 vols., Edinburgh 1985, vol. 1, pp. 98-99, reproduced vol. 2, pp. 176-7). Nonetheless, the style of all the drawings in this group seems closer to Herman Saftleven: see, for example, his similarly large and free View of the Mäuseturm, by Bingen (Braunschweig, Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum; W. Schulz, Herman Saftleven, 1982, cat. no. 726).
