Catalogue Note

Various attributions have been suggested for this drawing, including Gillis van Coninxloo, Lucas van Valckenborch and Anton Mirou.  It is, however, with landscapes by David Vinckboons that the closest comparisons can probably be drawn: the drawing formerly in the Welcker collection, Amsterdam, for example, is similarly freely drawn in the foliage, and equally unstructured in its spatial construction (see W. Bernt, Die Niederländischen Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, Munich 1958, pp. 639-40).  Also in some respects comparable is the fine wooded landscape in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris (inv. no. M620; see Renaissance et Maniérisme dans les Ecoles du Nord: Dessins des collections de l'École des Beaux-Arts, exhibition catalogue, Paris 1985, cat. no. 122).
