Autograph manuscript of Deux Epigrammes de Clément Marot, signed ("Maurice Ravel")
Catalogue Note
The second of the Deux Epigrammes, 'D'Anne jouant de l'espinette', was composed first, and is indeed one of Ravel's earliest works, written while temporarily excluded from the Paris Conservatoire, having failed all his exams. The poet elaborates on his pleasure at hearing Anne play the spinet, hoping that she might love him even a little. Ravel's music is delibrately "archaic", reflecting his choice of words by the early sixteenth-century poet Clément Marot (1496-1544). The accompaniment is marked "Clavecin ou Piano (en sourdine)" The two songs were first performed and published together in 1900 by Demets of Paris.
