CATALOGUE NOTE

Raoul Hynckes came to Holland from Belgium as a war victim in 1914. Until the early twenties he only produced impressionistic works, depicting ports and ships in the vicinity of Volendam. After seeing an exhibition of works by Picasso and Braque Hynckes started to work in a more realistic style with cubist influences. Until 1933 Hynckes painted mainly still lifes. nature morte is painted in above mentioned period. The influences of Cubism are visible but he still has his own style. In Nature Morte Hynckes made colour secondary to the composition. He loosens his subjects from their surroundings to give them ultimate expressiveness and to make the painting time-less. His objects are given the idea of immortality, as if will never change. Nature morte is a very good example of above mentioned characteristics.
