In the 1950’s there was this new Star fighter, the fighter aircraft, which was also acquired by the Dutch government. Every other minute another machine would thunder down. I have painted this endlessly; it became an Icarus figure, comparable to the ceiling painting in the museum the Mauritshuis in The Hague: The Icarus Atlantis. An almost vulgar theme turns into a more universally and mythically charged subject.
