Catalogue Note

Hurst and Calshot castles were part of Henry VIII's chain of coastal defences built to counter an invasion from Europe.  Located in Hampshire, both castles were strategically located to protect the Solent, the stretch of water which would give any invading force access to the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth.

Monamy Swaine was the son of Francis Swaine.  He is not recorded as having exhibited after 1774, but his date of death remains unknown.
