Catalogue Note

When Ranger was instrumental in retaining the America's Cup by beating Endeavour, it estalished its reputation as the fastest 'J-Class' yacht ever built.  It maintained this reputation by dominating the post-cup races of the New York Yacht Club Cruise.  Known as the "stallion of the seas" it raced for the N.Y.Y.C. Cup against not only the two Endeavours, but also Yankee, who held the America's Cup course record, and Rainbow, which had defeated Endeavour I to retain the cup in 1934.  Ranger was feted as having the ability to "squat down and go" and ended 1937 only beaten twice in thirty-seven starts.
