Catalogue Note

The celebrated action between the two frigates Shannon and Chesapeake took place on 1st June 1813.  H.M.S. Shannon was commanded by Captain Broke, and his victory was the turning point in the conflict between Britain and the U.S.A. which had begun on 18th June 1812 when President Maddison declared war on Britain.  Broke sent a written challenge to James Lawrence, Captain of the Chesapeake, to come out of Boston harbour and engage his ship in battle.  Broke's crew displayed superior gunnery and the action lasted only eleven minutes.
