Catalogue Note

Tilbury Fort was built in the late seventeenth century.  It was built in a style of fortification, known as the bastion style, and was designed to withstand an artillery attack.  The Fort's defences were never tested and the only military action which it saw was when it shot down a German zeppelin during the First World War.
