Description
- Joseph Heard
- A British barque, probably The Earl of Stanhope, in two positions in a heavy swell off Table Mountain, South Africa
- oil on canvas
Catalogue Note
The barque is closehauled, and is under shortened canvas in heavy seas as it approaches harbour. The barque displays its post 1840 Marryat's Ship Number (1st distinguishing pennant 3, 0, 2, 4) and may be identified as the barque Earl of Stanhope, which was built at Whitby in 1836. Lloyd's Registers record her voyaging to China and New South wales in the early 1840s.
Joseph Heard was born in Whithaven and died in Liverpool. Along with Samuel Walters he must rank as the finest Liverpool ship portraitist of the 19th century.
