The wide open-ended cuff of slightly tapering form decorated all over in high relief with abstract animals and insects, weighing approximately 119 dwts., signed Jean Mahie, maker's mark, assay mark.

This cuff bracelet is a prototype of the bold, sculptural bangles that were so popular during the 1970s. A pair of similar gold cuffs, made by Van Cleef & Arpels and owned by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, is illustrated by Judith Price, Masterpieces of American Jewelry, the catalogue for the exhibition at the American Folk Art Museum in New York, August 20, 2004 to January 23, 2005. These bangles were previously sold by Sotheby's in New York, see the catalogue Jewelry From the Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, April 24 and 25, 1996, lot 451.
