Catalogue Note

Between 1946 and 1947 over twenty thousand men, women and children were killed in communal riots in Bengal. In the works of the 'Calcutta Painters' the violence, pain and suffering of the crucified Christ became emblematic of their response to the violence and increasing corruption that they witnessed in post war India.
