K. G. Subramanyan (b. 1924)

In the late 1970's K. G. Subramanyan began to experiment with a two hundred-year-old south Indian tradition of reverse painting.  His visual language combines ancient techniques with modern materials providing a hybrid form that is striking and unique. The artist states, "You can call these my bazaar paintings ... paintings that deal with sensoriness of the commonplace, the strange provocativeness or of the nudginess of what you see down the street."
