Catalogue Note

Fantin's still-life paintings were first exhibited in London at the Royal Academy in 1864.  Through James Whistler he met Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Edwards, who purchased many of his flower paintings and helped to establish the artist's reputation and career.  This picture dating from the early 1880s demonstrates the style that would attract many admiring collectors.
