Catalogue Note
The present work shows the artist's first wife Charlotte (née Kaprolat) whom he married in 1911. Both were keen travellers and their journeys took them several times to Italy and the Palau Islands in the South Pacific. In Damenbildnis, Pechstein depicted his wife in a most beautiful and sensitive manner. The artist used his wife as a model for several paintings, for example, in Mutter und Kind (Lotte und Frank) of 1920, which now belongs to the Städtisches Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach.
