bidding is closed
Description
This red and black-stitched ONL (Heydler) baseball features 27 signatures from the 1923 National League Champion New York Giants. On the lightly soiled, creamy-toned ball, the signatures in black ink overall grade 6-7, with a few darker, a few lighter. Manager John J. McGraw (6) and Coach Hughie Jennings (6) appear on the sweet spot. Other Hall of Famer signatures include: Ross "Pep" Youngs (6-7) (died in 1927), Casey Stengel (7), Frank Frisch (5-6), Dave Bancroft (5-6), George Kelly (5-6) and Travis Jackson (6-7). Other signatures include: Gearin, Watson, Gaston, Groh, Jonnard, Shinners, Snyder, Bentley, Gowdy, Nehf, McQuillen, Meusel, V. Barnes, Scott, O'Connell, Dolan (coach), Cunningham, Maguire and Ryan.
The year 1923 signalled the changing of the guard - after two decades as New York's premier baseball team, this season the Giants would see their team unseated as champions, the newly opened Yankee Stadium would attract a million fans and Babe Ruth have one of his best seasons on his way to becoming the greatest slugger and number one attraction in all of sports.
After winning the 1921 and 1922 Series against their crosstown rivals, the Giants lost the 1923 Championship to the newly crowned Bronx Bombers. Although Casey Stengel would lift the Giants in Game 1 with his heroics, Babe Ruth would finally overcome his postseason demons, smacking three homers and hitting .368.
LOA's: PSA/DNA, GAI.
