In attendance for the 1921 home opening game at Griffith Stadium between the Washington Senators and Boston Red Sox, recently elected Vice President Calvin Coolidge signed this red and blue stitched Reach Ban Johnson/Official American League Ball in black ink (7/10) and dated it, April 13, 1921. Coolidge watched the game with former president Woodrow Wilson and new president Warren G. Harding. During his 1924-1928 term as President, Coolidge attended 11 Senators games and was the first US president to attend a World Series Opening Game (1924) and was also the first to throw out a ceremonial first pitch in the Series.
As for this game, the Senators lost their home opener 6-3 to the Red Sox. Walter Johnson left after 4 innings, the first time the Hall of Famer failed to finish an opening game.
