Description

The glow lasted all winter after the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers World Series championship. The Dodgers' victory was Brooklyn's victory and it was felt across the borough, permeating social and racial barriers. For years, Yankee fans had tortured Dodger fans waiting for the early editions of the News and the Mirror at candy stores around the borough. Now Brooklyn kids stuck their fingers out at the hated Yankee fans. At neighborhood bars, no one could get enough of Brooklyn baseball talk, especially about that handsome, cocky kid from upstate named Johnny Podres who could walk on water. Women in local babushkas bantered about the Dodgers, not so much about the title but more about how happy their kids were and how cute that pitcher was. Brooklynites savored that victory with such depth, certainly because it came at such a price, but also perhaps because they sensed it may never happen again. Offered is simply one of the finest signed baseballs from the exalted 1955 Dodgers team extant. The slightly off-white ONL (Giles) ball bears the signature of (22) members of the team incl. Robinson, Campanella (MVP), Koufax, Hodges, Reese, Snider, Alston, Kellert, Labine, Zimmer, Hoak, Podres, Erskine, Furillo, and Newcombe. Every signature remains in near pristine condition ranging from 9-10/10. Considering the enthusiasm and fanfare surrounding this band of heroes, it is remarkable that such an artifact could have been spared from handling by eager admirers. It is also entirely free of clubhouse signatures so commonly found on Dodgers baseballs of the era. Graded 9.5 Mint by PSA, it is by far the finest 1955 Dodger team ball inspected by that firm to date. LOAs from JSA and PSA/DNA.
