1953 NL Champion Brooklyn Dodgers Team Signed Photo including Robinson and Campanella

bidding is closed

Description

Even though they lost the World Series in six games to their rival Yankees, many have argued that the 1953 Dodgers are the greatest Brooklyn club in history. Storming through the ’53 season, the Dodgers led the league in every offensive category, and scored more runs (955), hit more home runs (208) and won more games (105) than any Brooklyn team before or since. Their lineup boasted the league MVP (Roy Campanella), NL batting champion (Carl Furillo), and Rookie of the Year (Jim Gilliam). If the Cy Young Award had existed at the time, twenty game-winner Carl Erskine would have won it easily. This first generation 8" by10" photograph has been signed by 25 contributors to that NL championship squad. The ball point signatures ranges in quality from 5-9/10 with most being distinctly legible. Those signing include George Shuba, Clem Labine, Carl Erskine, Cookie Lavagetto, Billy Herman, Jake Pitler, Junior Gilliam, Roy Campanella ("9"), Russ Meyer, Billy Cox, Carl Furillo, Jackie Robinson ("7"), Ben Wade, Johnny Podres, Billy Loes, Dick Williams, Duke Snider ("5"), Pee Wee Reese ("8"), Bobby Morgan, Wayne Belardi, Rube Walker, Gil Hodges ("7"), Bob Milliken, Joe Black and Preacher Roe. Signing (in the foreground), but not pictured, were Walt Alston (hired to replace Dressen before the '54 season) and Don Newcombe (who returned from military service in 1954). Logically, then, it seems that this composite was autographed early in '54, possibly during Spring Training. Matted and framed, in excellent condition. LOAs from JSA and PSA/DNA.
