1924 Football Shaped Rose Bowl Program—University of Washington vs. Navy

bidding is closed

Description

Produced for the 1924 Rose Bowl Game, only the second game played in the huge new stadium built in Pasadena, this program offers both rarity and top quality design features. Prior to 1923 the Rose Bowl was called the Tournament of Roses Game and was played at an athletic field with grandstands on the Cal Tech campus. The 1924 Rose Bowl game was the first Bowl game ever for both Washington and Navy, two storied institutions. The game ended in a 14-14 tie after Washington managed a late comeback. Washington finished with a 10-1 regular season with Navy at 5-1-2. Washington’s star fullback Elmer Tesreau played the game with a broken leg, as they were led offensively by halfback and leading ground gainer George Wilson. Navy was led by Alan Shapley and Ira McKee. The 1924 Rose Bowl was the first major national exposure for the Washington Husky football program, even though they had a dynasty from 1908-1916, winning 58 games without a loss and tying three under head coach Gil Dobie. Washington has been one of the most successful collegiate football programs ever since. Dobie was nevertheless fired after the 1916 season for irregularities of a player taking an exam. The Chancellor placed the blame on Dobie with three players admitting guilt decades later. Dobie later was a highly successful coach at Cornell and several other schools and is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The 1924 Rose Bowl was the 10th in the series of prestigious games that begun in 1902, starting the Bowl tradition. The program is in near mint condition.
