painted with the crowned monarch wearing ceremonial robes astride his rearing steed, flanked by two leafy trees within a blue dash border on the rim. Fine haircracks and some restoration to the rim.

The source for this equestrian portrait is an engraving of Charles I by Cornelius van Dalen, which forms the frontispiece to Nalson's Journal of the Tryal of Charles I, published in 1684. A similar charger inscribed with the initials C R was in the collection of Bryan Harland, sold at Sotheby's, London, February 11, 1931, lot 116, the the appearance of the equestrian figure later adapted to resemble the subsequently reigning monarch depicted on the present example.
