Catalogue Note

This picture was commissioned by Edward Herbert son of Edward Clive, Earl of Powis and his wife Lady Henrietta Herbert. In accordance with the will of his uncle he changed his name from Clive to Herbert in 1807. He was M.P. for Ludlow from 1806 until 1839 when he inherited the earldom from his father. In 1818 he married Lady Lucy Graham, daughter of James 3rd Duke of Montrose. He was President of the Roxburgh Club, and candidate for the Chancellorship of Cambridge University in 1847 when he was defeated by the Prince Regent. He carried out substantial repairs to his family seat, Powis Castle.

A year before the date of this picture, Ferneley painted a celebrated large picture for the Quorn Hunt for Herbert's neighbour, the Earl of Plymouth.
