John Frederick Herring Snr 1795-1865

Sir Tatton Sykes was a bay colt foaled in 1843 by Melbourne out of a Margrave mare.  He was originally named Tibthorpe, but his owner and jockey, Bill Scott named him after his old master, Sir Tatton Sykes, Bt.  In 1846 Sir Tatton Sykes, easily won the 2000 Guineas and the St Leger, and came second at the Derby.  He would have won this too had there not been an argument between the jockey and the starter.  All the horses had begun the race, but Scott remained at the start line in order to finish the dispute.  The field were nearly a hundred yards ahead before Sir Tatton Sykes started.  He overhauled them, but too much had been taken out of him, and Pyrrhus the First won by a neck.
