Description

  • John Mogford (After Canaletto)
  • the grand canal
  • signed l.r.: John Mogford Delt
  • watercolour and pencil heightened with bodycolour

Catalogue Note

The present watercolour is after Canaletto's The Bucintoro returning to the Molo on Ascension Day, (Royal Collection - see W. G. Constable, Canaletto, 1989, vol II, no. 335), which is taken from the viewpoint from Bacino di S. Marco, just west of the Piazzetta. This painting was engraved by Visentini in 1735 and it is possible that Mogford based this watercolour on the engraving.

Mogford is better known for his coastal scenes of Devon and Cornwall, however, he is known to have painted a number of Italianate subjects such as The Coast of Lazio, Near Rome (sold in these Rooms, 19 February 1981, lot 107).
