Catalogue Note

This watercolour was drawn during Callow's walking tour of France in the summer of 1836. He set off from Paris with his German friend, Soherr, on 6th June and travelled along the Loire and then south through France. He arrived in Marseilles on 28th July 1836, his twenty-fourth birthday, and made in his words 'a number of sketches of merchantmen coming into the harbour.'
