William Callow R.W.S. 1812-1908

William Callow was a well-travelled and keenly perceptive artist. He was known to have kept a small sketchbook which he filled with quick sketches and sharp observations, creating lasting reminders of the European cities and countryside he had visited.  In 1846 he married Harriet Smart, and together they undertook an extended ten week honeymoon, travelling down the Rhine, stopping off at Cologne, Nuremburg and Munich.  He visited Basel during this trip and a view of the city, dated 1846, was sold in these Rooms on 15th July 1999, lot 78.  After his return home Callow would often work up his sketches into finished watercolours, such as the present work
