Paul Sandby, R.A. 1730-1809

Sandby exhibited a watercolour entitled View of Bridgenorth at the Royal Academy in 1771, (no.173) shortly after his first visit to Wales. It is also likely that he passed through Bridgenorth on his way to or from Wales with his patron Sir Watkin Williams Wynn in circa 1779. He subsequently returned to Wales with Sir Joseph Banks.

Another smaller watercolour by Sandby of Bridgenorth, taken from a different viewpoint, was sold in these rooms on 14th July 1988, lot 55 for £4,400.
