Catalogue Note

Herstmonceux Castle is located in East Sussex near Hailsham. The extract inscribed in the early pages of the album, which is taken from a survey book, describes the house in detail:
The Manor House of Herstmonceux standeth on the East side of the Church at Herstmonceux...The House being Castle-like builded Quadrant everyway containing two hundred feet in length and as much in breadth...My Lord's Arms fairly set forth in stone on the Front over the Entering...the same Gate and Towers have port -holes emboed under the embattlement for casting stones and other defensive Engines...The Watch-Towers wasted of great length with violence of wind and weather, needful to be seen unto.
