Catalogue Note
The subject is taken from Ovid's Metamorphosis and depicts Jupiter, disguised in a cloud seducing his wife's priestess Io, while she dreams.
Henry Bone grew up in Plymouth and learned to paint on hard paste china for a Cookworthy factory. However, in 1779 the factory went bankrupt and the artist moved to London to pursue a career as a professional artist. Bone earned a living by visiting great private collections and offering to paint enamel copies of important pictures. The present lot confirms that Bone made one such visit to Sledmere Manor, the seat of Sir Mark Masterman-Sykes 3rd Bt. (1771-1823), where the famous painting of Jupiter and Io by Correggio was housed during this period
