Catalogue Note
The sitter was the daughter of the Rev. William Miller of Neilston, Renfrew. In circa 1792 she married William Grant, son of Francis Grant, Lord Cullen. Her husband was an important political figure in Scotland after the defeat of the Jacobites in 1745. As Lord Advocate he took a major role in drafting and steering through parliament important statutes concerning the Scottish Highlands. In 1754 he retired from his post and was appointed Lord of Justiciary in the Scottish courts, taking the title of Lord Prestongrange. His portrait by Ramsay, painted in 1751, is the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
