The sitter was the daughter of Captain John Goodall of Shalfleet in the Isle of Wight, and granddaughter of Admiral Sir Thomas Hopson. On 7 June 1737 she married William Player, whose ancestor Henry Player bought the manor of Ryde in the Isle of Wight in 1705. She died in 1743 and her portrait descended through the family of her husband and his second wife Jane Wynne.
