In 1762, when this portrait was painted, Ramsay was at the height of his Royal patronage, and was receiving commissions from the grandest nobility.  Shortly before completing this work, Ramsay had painted a whole length portrait of King George III as well as a profile for the coinage.  These royal portraits were commissioned to celebrate the coronation of the king, and were to become Ramsay's most famous works.
