Catalogue Note
The sitter was the son of Robert Broke and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of William Waters of Wimbledon. His great great grandfather, Sir Robert Broke, was Chief Baron of the Exchequer under Henry VII and built Broke Hall in Suffolk. Sir Richard was Master of Ceremonies to James I and in 1620 married Maria, daughter of Sir John Packington Bt. of Westwood Wiltshire. His eldest son Robert was created a baronet in 1661
