full length, standing, wearing black robes and a white lace collar

Provenance

By descent from the sitter to Sir Basil Dixwell, who left his estates to George Oxenden, his great nephew;
Thence by descent in the Oxenden family, Broome Park, to Muriel Oxenden, Lady Capel Cure, her sale, Christie's, 20th November 1931, lot 95, bt. Hartveld for £37.16

Catalogue Note

The sitter was the son of Charles Dixwell of Coton, Warwickshire, and his wife Abigail Herdson of Stourton, Lincolnshire. From his maternal uncle, John Herdson, he inherited substantial estates in Kent and he moved to the county, living first at Terlingham and moving in 1622 to Broome where he built a substantial house. He was M.P. for Hythe in 1626, and in 1627 he was made a baronet by Charles I.
