Catalogue Note

The sitter was the second son of Nell Gwyn by Charles II. He was born in Pall Mall and died aged nine in Paris. His elder brother Charles was created Earl of Burford in 1676 and Duke of St Albans in 1684 (see lot 37)

By Royal Warrant dated 17th January 1677, which assigned arms both to him and his brother, he was made Lord Beauclaire with the place and precedence of the eldest son of an Earl.
